A lot of people put a lot of work into this.
I may not agree with every position, but at least there are now clear positions to discuss and possibly act on.
The real promise is that, through this work, increasing numbers of black folk (1) will come to believe and act themselves as if black lives do, in fact, matter; (2) will become agents, taking ownership of the power and freedom they already have, making decisions for themselves, and owning the results of their actions; (3) will thus rethink and redefine blackness.
“Black” won’t mean, in the future, what it did in the past.

Two points:
(1) In the Supreme Court case in question, the court overruled a parent’s objection to her daughter being required to recite the Mexican Pledge of Allegiance as a “make-believe” exercise in Spanish class. Recitation of the American Pledge of Allegiance, by contrast, is presumed not to be “make-believe,” and thus cannot lawfully be compelled.
(2) The author requires his law students to argue positions they don’t actually believe, in order to obtain understandings of, as it were, the other side. So this goes way beyond mere dialogue with opposing views. Question: how much of what’s happening, for example on college campuses, right now, is a refusal even to permit dialogue to occur?
