How to eat a grape

Use your lips, teeth and tongue.

This post has been coming for years.

I first met globe grapes while I was living in Barclay, at the Safeway on 25th Street.  I recently met them again, at the Streets Market at Saratoga and Charles.

I think they come from Australia.  They’re huge, about an inch in diameter; bright pink; and perfectly round, like a globe.

To eat one:

(1) Put it between your lips and teeth.  With your teeth, bite just the surface of the grape, to make a cut in the skin.  Holding that bit in your teeth, use your lips to rotate the grape, peeling the skin off as you go, until the fleshy round ball stands there naked.

Chew and swallow the skin.

(2) With your incisor teeth, bite down into the very center of the grape.  There will be four seeds.

Suck them out.

Using your tongue, tuck them into your cheek.

(3) Thoroughly bite into the remaining flesh.  Chew and swallow.

(4) Now comes the foremost question in life:  What to do with the seeds?

Spit, or swallow?

A momentous question.

The choice is yours.

If you choose to spit, I wish you well.  Many people prefer to swallow, with or without chewing them up first.
