Normalizing obscenity

A new vocabulary word, perhaps, for some readers:  “unexpurgated.”

Note, 03/11/23:  I have serious misgivings about this post.  In recent weeks, I’ve set my sights back on living according to “Upward”, focusing my attention wholly on positive things, on the good, on the right, on things I actually desire.  That wisdom would counsel discarding this draft completely.  But I’ve already done tons of work on it …  It may be well enough to finish out what I’ve got, and admit at the end that I have no solutions.

At the Dunkin’ Donuts where I go, they play one radio station over the PA continuously, WZFT 104.3.  When I wanted to find out the title and artist for a song, I used to make note of a portion of the lyrics, and then Google those words.  And the results often scandalized me.

The unexpurgated version that streams on their website is often very different from what’s played on the air.

Which gives me some concern, that the broadcast versions may be, in effect, merely advertisements for CDs or mp3 files or streaming that will have the listeners swimming in obscenity.

All the songs sampled here below get lots of airtime on WZFT.

I hit her phone with the tea, like, “Bitch, guess what? All the rich-ass boys wanna fuck on us!” All this ass sittin’ up, you could look, don’t touch And I’m bad bussin’ bands every time we link up

Bad bitch, I could be your fantasy (Yeah) I can tell you got big dick energy (Uh-huh) It ain’t too many niggas that can handle me (Yeah) But I might let you try it off the Hennessy (Uh) Make ’em sing to this pussy like a melody (Make ’em sang) And if your bitch ain’t right, I got the remedy (Ooh) It ain’t too many niggas that can handle me (Ayy) Bad bitch, I could be your fantasy (Ayy, ayy)

Fuck you and your mom and your sister and your job And your broke-ass car and that shit you call art Fuck you and your friends that I’ll never see again Everybody but your dog, you can all fuck off

Didn’t expect this from Ed Sheeran (Ed Sheeran – Don’t Lyrics | AZLyrics.com):

That heart is so cold All over my home I don’t wanna know that babe Don’t fuck with my love I told her she knows Take aim and reload I don’t wanna know that babe

In this situation, 14 Problematic Song Lyrics That Received So Much Backlash, They Were Changed After Being Released, they censored the references to developmental disabilities, but kept the obscenities.  I hadn’t known Beyonce said such things.

I have remarked before that Jon Stewart, John Oliver and Stephen Colbert are all guttermouths.

As witness these items:

Oh, I forgot Seth Myers; probably because he’s never yet said anything I felt deserved my attention:

Moreover, a number of major media outlets, including HuffPost as in the article linked to just now, have altered their styles[*] in recent years, to allow obscenities where none were permitted before.

This is happening.  I have no solutions.  But to choose the best.

Some PARENTS use extremely poor judgment.  The song in question has many obscenities:

But — hey.  At least it’s not Katy Perry.

[*]Practically every newspaper, magazine, or electronic media platform has a style manual, the purpose of which is to establish consistency in the form of its expressions.  A style manual normally answers various otherwise arbitrary questions, such as these:

  1. When one may use abbreviations or contractions, and which ones one may use

  2. Forms of dates

  3. When numbers need to be expressed in words (“eleven”) or instead in numerals (“11”)

  4. Whether or not the Oxford comma is mandated

It is evident that many media outlets have changed their style manuals in recent years, principally to serve political correctness.
