Putin

Wrongdoers persist in hostility toward the innocent.

From my diary for Thursday 01/19/23:

So, at 19:00, as planned, I’m heading down the stairs for my last trip to DD. This crazy man, who’s been bunked for a while immediately north of Vince and who normally comes off as catatonic, meets me coming up the stairs. And he reaches out as if to grab me. I pass the landing and am headed down the next flight, when he leans way over and says, “I need $5.” I said, “I don’t have that.” He said, “Are you going to Dunkin’ Donuts?” I said yes. He said, “I need coffee and a doughnut.” I said, “I can’t do anything about that, unless you’re there.” He said, “I’ll go with you.”

He catches up to me outside with no outerwear and just his flip-flops. Now, he asks me for two doughnuts. I ask if he ate supper, and he says no. Well, that doesn’t place any obligation on me. Then he asks me to buy him some Chinese food. I said, “No, I’m not going to do that.” Keep in mind that I’d already paid in excess of $10.00 for Ron’s supper.

We get inside the store, and this man is at the register. The guy stands right next to him, and asks him to buy coffee and a doughnut. (Pause.) The man buys him a small coffee, and a doughnut. My turn at the register. Now he orders a large coffee and another doughnut. I order my drink. Now, the guy also orders a sandwich and two hash browns. The clerk looks at me, and I shake my head no. Remember, Ron’s supper had cost me $10 already.

He smacked my arm. He reaches over the cash register, points to the clerk, and says, “Add that on there.”

I can’t get this guy’s nerve.

At one point, I said, “No.” He said, “One hash brown.” I shook my head, turned around and left the store. I lit a smoke and walked up to Madison and Calvert. I turned around to see if he left; I didn’t see him anywhere. I went back to the store, and he wasn’t there.

But he’s never going to get anything from me in the future.

Sunday 01/22/23

They called supper unusually early tonight, beginning maybe 16:40. I don’t like the way this one guy does it, because it’s not clear that that’s what he’s doing. Unclear as to what the situation was, I got up from my bunk to go see if there was a line, and to use the bathroom.

The crazy guy and I passed each other in this narrow aisle between bunks. He looked as if he’s still hostile toward me.

Struck me that that’s the same attitude as Putin has toward Ukraine. They had done him no wrong, but he wanted to take from them; so far he’s failed, but he still wants to take. And he’s hostile.
